Abstract:
HTRI condenser and reboiler design methods assume phase equilibrium, thus permitting a single bulk temperature profile for the two-phase fluid. However, many vaporizers and condensers operate with separated phases, requiring individual non-equilibrium liquid and vapor temperature profiles. This report uses a mechanistic model to examine the separation phenomenon by phase pressure balancing. Approximate phase separation plots for two-phase, no-phase-change, condensing, and boiling systems are presented. The report also details a method for determining shellside condensation in exchangers with vertical baffle cut, discusses behavior as a function of process conditions, and recommends future work.
