Abstract:
The theory of fogging during condensation of vapors in the presence of noncondensable gases is reviewed. Conditions necessary for fogging are the supersaturation of the vapor-gas mixture and the presence of nuclei in the gas phase. An algorithm to predict the degree of supersaturation was developed. The degree of supersaturation required for fogging varies depending on the amount and the type of nuclei present. Uncertainty about the quantity and type of nuclei in a process condenser makes it generally difficult to identify a priori the problem of fogging in a condenser.
