Abstract:

A joint committee from Heat Transfer Research, Inc. (HTRI) and the Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association (TEMA) has been examining the Fouling Section of the latest edition of the TEMA Standards. This report presents the results of seven meetings that have occurred over the past three years. There are specific recommendations for information to be included in the next edition of the TEMA Standards. There is a discussion of the position taken by some members and visitors to the meetings presenting differences from that which has been recommended. In summary, the Joint Committee recommends that the current use of fouling resistances be retained as the means for providing additional surface for the design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers. It suggests that a new Recommended Good Practices Section on Fouling be added to the TEMA Standards. A revised set of "typical values" for fouling resistances should be made a part of this new Recommended Good Practices Section on Fouling.
